What Happens During a Hypnosis Session?

Maybe you are curious about hypnosis, but part of you is still wondering what you are actually signing up for.

Will you be asleep? Will you remember what happened? Will you still be in control? Do you need to know exactly what you want to work on before you arrive?

These are completely reasonable questions. Hypnosis is often portrayed as mysterious or dramatic, but an individual session is usually much more collaborative and grounded than people expect.

Every practitioner works differently, so I can only speak to the way I guide sessions at Soul Care Anna. My approach brings together hypnosis, somatic awareness, guided reflection, breathwork, mindfulness, and other supportive practices based on your intentions and what feels appropriate in the moment.

We begin with conversation

Before moving into hypnosis, we take time to talk.

You can share what has been feeling difficult, what you would like to shift, or how you would like to feel instead. You might arrive with a very specific pattern you are ready to explore. You might simply know that you feel overwhelmed, disconnected, reactive, or stuck.

You do not need to have everything figured out. Part of the beginning of the session is creating enough space to listen for what feels most important.

I may ask questions about:

  • What you have been experiencing

  • What you would like to be different

  • How you notice the pattern in your thoughts, emotions, or body

  • The strengths and resources you already have

  • The beliefs or feelings you would like to carry forward

This conversation helps us create an intention for the session. It also gives you an opportunity to ask questions and let me know what would help you feel more comfortable.

You remain an active participant

Hypnosis is not something I do to you. It is a process we move through together.

You do not give up control, and you are not required to follow a suggestion that does not feel right. You can speak, move, ask to pause, open your eyes, or end the process at any time.

Choice and agency are woven throughout my approach. I may offer several ways to engage with an exercise rather than assuming one method will work for everyone. You are invited to notice what feels supportive and leave behind what does not.

We help the body settle

Once you are comfortable, I guide you through a process that supports relaxation and focused attention.

That might include noticing your breath, becoming aware of the places where your body is already supported, gently releasing tension, or focusing on the sound of my voice. Some people feel deeply relaxed. Others remain more alert while noticing that their attention has turned inward.

There is no single feeling you have to achieve for hypnosis to be happening. You do not need to make your mind completely blank, stop every thought, or reach a certain level of relaxation.

We explore what is beneath the familiar pattern

As your attention becomes more focused, we begin working with the intention you identified at the beginning of the session.

Depending on you and your goals, I may guide you through imagery, questions, memories, sensations, metaphors, future rehearsal, or suggestions created from your own words. Somatic practices may be included to help you notice what is happening in your body without forcing an experience or pushing past your capacity.

The purpose is not always to uncover one dramatic origin story. Sometimes the most meaningful part of a session is recognizing a belief, seeing a familiar response differently, connecting with an internal resource, or experiencing another possibility.

You may talk, or you may have a quieter experience

Some hypnosis sessions are interactive. You may describe what you notice or respond to questions while remaining relaxed and inwardly focused.

Other parts may be quieter, with more space to listen, imagine, feel, or simply allow the experience to unfold. We can adapt the process based on your comfort, your needs, and the direction of the session.

We integrate before you return to your day

Toward the end, I guide you back into ordinary alertness gradually. We leave time to notice what came up, talk about the experience, and consider what may support you afterward.

You might leave with a journaling prompt, a small practice, a new perspective, or a personalized recording to reinforce part of the session. Not every insight needs to be understood immediately. Sometimes the integration continues through what you notice in the following days.

What does hypnosis feel like?

The experience varies.

Some people describe heaviness, lightness, warmth, tingling, spaciousness, vivid imagery, or a sense that time moved differently. Some notice very little physically and remain aware of the room throughout the session.

You may hear everything I say. You may remember the entire experience. Having thoughts or noticing outside sounds does not mean you are doing it wrong.

Hypnosis is commonly described as a state involving increased relaxation and focused concentration. Your experience does not need to resemble anyone else's for it to be meaningful.

What if I have never been hypnotized before?

That is completely okay. You do not need prior experience, a special ability, or a perfectly quiet mind.

Curiosity and willingness are enough places to begin. If something does not feel comfortable, we slow down, adjust, or choose another direction.

Virtual and in-person sessions

I offer both virtual hypnosis sessions and in-person hypnosis immersions in San Diego.

Virtual sessions allow you to participate from a familiar space in your own home. In-person sessions may also incorporate the vibroacoustic table, sound, Reiki, or other supportive elements when appropriate.

The heart of the process remains the same: creating space to listen inward, explore the patterns beneath the surface, and connect with how you want to move forward.

You do not need to have everything figured out

You can come to a session with a clear goal, a pattern you are ready to shift, or simply the feeling that something needs to change.

Wherever you are, we can start there.
